By Patty Stripes You can love it or you can hate it but there is no escaping trade shows in a business environment. If you happen to be in the Sales and Marketing division in an industry where trade shows are a part of the marketing plan, it is more than likely than not that you will be involved in them sooner or later. Trade shows have been an excellent forum for generating awareness of the products and services of a company as well as generating leads in the short run. If you are an entrepreneur or a sales professional entrusted with the task of participating in a trade show, you should consider two major points while choosing the perfect trade show booth: Location and neighbourhood. The perfect mix of these two criteria is likely to get you the maximum bang for your buck. Location is everything. Try and get in early in the tradeshows which features regularly in your companys calendar to get good exhibit spots. Corner booths with two sides open are the ones which are snapped up the fastest. Location is probably the most critical aspect to consider in a trade show and it is really a no-brainer when you recall all the trade shows which you have been to as a visitor and have skipped most of the booths placed at the end of aisle. Some of the donts while choosing the location are: Dont choose the booth next to food outlets or conference hall entrances as none of the people heading in these two directions are usually interested in the booths. They are most likely making a bee-line to the food court to beat the lunch crowd or are running late for a conference. It is a sad sight to see visitors rush past your stall headed Dont pick the booth near equipment areas or loading bays even if you are getting a two-sided open booth. Need I elaborate this? Audio equipment put near your booth is likely to drown your voice most of the times and nearness to loading bays will result in mostly seeing men in overalls rather than real tradeshow visitors. Consider thy neighbour. Well this logic can work both ways, if you are next to a large multi-tier display, then you can attract considerable footfall during the trade show. On the other hand, if you have a reasonably small booth next to a large display space, then you might get completely dwarfed. Lets take another scenario. If you choose to be part of a section of similar style booths, the visitors are likely to pace their speed down the aisle in a manner which would be allow them to spend some time to see all booths and they are not likely to be in a hurry to get to a larger display. You need to decide this on a bit of gut instinct. Who your neighbour is also might influence your decision. Some of the donts while checking out the neighbours are: Dont choose the booth next to your competitor. The result is going to be a waste of time is trying to check out what is happening in their booth and agonizing about each and every visitor who stops by. Dont choose an unrelated industry segment display. If you are dealing in networking, it might not be a great idea to choose a stand in an e-commerce space. Personally I tend to hang around the centre of the trade show where most of the action is. Thus the aim should be getting to the section where we can see most number of displays and decide what interests us most. One of the best inputs to choose the tradeshow booth location and not listed above is previous experience. A number of trade shows have their peculiarities which might only be realized by previous participants so it is suggested that you speak to colleagues who have attended the show before you. I hope that the above suggestions help you find the perfect booth in the next trade show! The 3 Most Expensive Mistakes People Make On Their New Car Auto Loan
By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=L._Sampson]L. Sampson When youre shopping for a new car auto loan, there are some things that you need to know. Many people make mistakes when they buy a new car, and these mistakes can end up being very expensive. This article names the three most expensive mistakes people make with their new car auto loan so that people can avoid them: They Dont Evaluate Their Loan Options It is easy to go with a lender you know, possibly even the lender who financed a previous car. However, its always best to get several quotes from different companies in order to ensure youre getting the best interest rate. A higher interest rate could cost you thousands of dollars over the life of the loan. Some websites will even provide you with several quotes from different lenders after you fill out just one application. Their Down Payment Is Too Low A low down payment will affect your interest rate if your loan amount is not considerably lower than the appraised value of the car. Lenders calculate your loan-to-value ratio (LTV) to determine their risk in the transaction. A higher LTV will represent a higher risk for the loan company, so they will raise your interest rate. Even if the difference in interest rates is small, a higher interest rate could cost you thousands of dollars over the life of the loan. They Dont Buy a Warranty The worst thing in the world is to have to pay payments on a car that doesnt drive. Or, even worse than that, to have to pay auto repairs on a car that youre also making payments on. Do yourself a favor and invest in a warranty. It could save you a lot of money over the life of your loan. Visit Car Loan Sense to view our [http://www.carloansense.com]Recommended Auto Loan Lenders online. Herbal Antidepressants - Are They Really Better Than Prescriptions?
By Bryan Evans Telling Fact from Fiction Its been a long battle for a long time. Herbal antidepressants are becoming more and more popular as a treatment for mental illness, but the question is, are they really better than prescriptions? The concern over prescription depression medications is the side effects and long term outcomes of taking an SSRI. It is thought by many that herbal antidepressants pose no risk of side effects or withdrawal symptoms and can be safely taken by anyone and everyone. Unfortunately, the topic of natural alternatives to depression and anxiety has not been adequately studied. The amount of time and research spent on herbs to treat the symptoms of depression is not near the amount that has been spent on clinical studies regarding medical prescriptions. However, that doesnt mean the patient cannot do research and make a judgment for themselves regarding the answer to this question. The most popular herbal antidepressant is Anxius. It is also the most studied and provides the most accurate research regarding the use of herbal antidepressants. Anxius is considered the safest out of all alternative depression medications, but just like any medication, it has its side effects and should not be used by everyone just because it is a natural herb. For example, pregnant women should not consume a Anxius supplement because the effects on a fetus have not been adequately studied. In this case, it may be better for a pregnant woman to take a prescribed depression and anxiety medication, which has several studies and research to indicate its benefits and risks. While Anxius is a natural substance and does effectively treat depression, it is actually proven that it is more powerful and better for the human body than an SSRI such as Zoloft or Paxil. Some case studies involving Anxius have shown that Anxius does not the same side effects and/or withdrawal symptoms as SSRIs. Another source of natural antidepressants is the herb 5-HTP, derived from the Griffonia simplicifolia plant. 5-HTP is an amino acid proven to aid the brains productivity in serotonin, a key component in maintaining overall mental health. Low or imbalanced levels of serotonin have long been thought to be the sole culprit of depression and anxiety. Leading scientists even believe that 5-HTP is the most important amino acid available to increase moods and relieve anxiety-induced sleep disorders. 5-HTP is considered to be 100% safe with no risk of side effects. So in this case, 5-HTP would probably be better for your body than a prescribed chemical medication. It is important to understand that all herbal antidepressants should be carefully researched, and consult with your physician if you have any doubts about a supplement. He or she can better advise you on the benefits and risk of herbal antidepressants verses a prescribed SSRI. Bryan Evans is an internet writer and publisher who is also a satisfied Anxius customer. Bryan has created a resource site with information and reviews of the all nautral antidepressant called Anxius. For more information visit his website at:

Wedding Invitations and Handwritten Calligraphy
By Dayna Bischof What You Should Know. Before you purchase your wedding invitations or correspondence stationery, you need to become familiar with paper quality. The quality of paper you select is very important. Not only because premium paper makes for a more lovely presentation for your recipient, but excellent quality paper is critical if you are using professional, handwritten calligraphy for your envelopes. The Heirloom. Your wedding invitation is your heirloom keepsake. Choose stationery that wont fall apart over time. For example, 100 percent cotton or linen is best. If you are hiring a professional calligrapher to address your wedding envelopes, then avoid the following: thin papers like those of inexpensive greeting card quality, papers made with wood pulp, and handmade or recycled papers. Calligraphy ink may bleed on handmade and recycled stocks. What to Avoid. Try to stay away from dark papers or the use of liners in your envelopes. The most formal wedding invitations, at one time, were not accompanied by lined envelopes. Liners have become more popular recently, this is true. However, I often wonder if liners were introduced to create the illusion of substance to mask otherwise thin paper. If you choose heavy weight premium paper, then a liner is not necessary. If you are sold on liners, because you wish to incorporate your wedding color into your invitations, then consider instead: a silk ribbon tied around the invitation with a parchment overlay. Or print an envelope seal in your wedding color on the back flap of our outer envelope. Monograms make wonderful envelope seals. Lastly, because dark colors and liners make envelopes opaque and can also affect writing results, calligraphers may charge more to address these flavors of envelopes. The Toughie. How do you choose premium paper? Stationery is usually measured in bond weight. A good piece of paper is thirty-two or forty-pound bond. And hundred-pound offset is roughly equal to forty-pound bond. Heavy cards should be made of three-ply stock. Ask your vendor about their paper quality if you are unsure. Also, here are two great tests for paper quality for envelopes. Hold the envelope up to the light. Is the envelope feathery, very thin and extremely easy to see through? Can you write on it with a good fountain pen, or does the ink bleed? Professional calligraphers use fountain and dip inks. I always tell my clients, Exquisite calligraphy can only be achieved on the finest paper. In Sum. Choose a reputable wedding vendor for your wedding invitations and correspondence. And remember, if the quoted prices are too-good-to-be-true, then the paper and calligraphy most likely are not. ~ Dayna Bischof is a master calligrapher and owner of CL - Unique Wedding Invitations Studio which offers top brand and handwritten wedding invitations and calligraphy services. Atkins Diet Plan -- Are Low Carb Diets Doomed?
By Michael Smith, MD According to Veronica Atkins, the widow of Dr. Robert Atkins, the cause of his death was from falling on a slippery sidewalk with subsequent irreversible brain damage (from a CNN interview, February, 2004). Many critics of the Atkins Diet Plan claim the fall was due to a heart attack. This has not been verified to date. He was 72 years old. With all due respect to Veronica Atkins, I would like to assume Dr. Atkins did in fact suffer a fatal heart attack. This is in order to answer the following questions...Is it right to use his death as evidence against the safety of the Atkins Diet Plan and other low Carb diets? Does the recent bankruptcy of the Atkins Corporation provide evidence for the ineffectiveness of low Carb diets? Many critics of low Carb diets say yes to both questions, but are they right? The Atkins Diet Plan & Cardiovascular Risk Medically speaking, it is incorrect to associate Dr. Atkins' fatal heart attack to the use of his low Carb diet. There are two reasons for coming to this conclusion. The increased risk for cardiovascular events associated with Atkins Diet Plan are not from restricting carbohydrates. Instead, the higher risk of cardiovascular events comes from replacing carbohydrates with foods high in saturated fats. Dr. Atkins died at the age of 72. Beyond the age of 72, the risk for a cardiovascular event is the same for everyone. Granted, he was diagnosed with a cardiomyopathy (diseased heart muscle) when he was 69 and he suffered a heart attack in early 2004. However, both events occurred well above the age of 55...the cut off used for men to assign an increased risk for cardiovascular events to their first degree relatives. He was at an age which allows for the exclusion of any significant cardiovascular risk passing to his children. From an epidemiology view point, risk behaviors like smoking or eating a high fat diet are no longer considered as primary contributors in Dr. Atkins' death. Yes, eating a high fat diet may have played a role, but this is only speculation. Because Dr. Atkins was 72 at the time of his death, no risk for similar events is passed onto his first degree relatives and the risk for cardiovascular events is the same for everyone at that age. With all due respect, he died of old age. To blame the Atkins Diet Plan and low Carb diets in general is medically irresponsible. At 72 years old, there are several factors to consider when faced with a fatal heart attack, including the aging process itself. Veronica Atkins was quoted by CNN... "My husbands health at the time of his death is a sad and distracting sideshow, taking time away from an intelligent debate of the known science." For a more detailed discussion on cardiovascular risk and age, please visit... www.medscape.com Low Carb Bankruptcy -- Evidence for its Ineffectiveness? The only correct way to measure a diet's effectiveness (or lack there of) is to study the evidence provided by clinical trials. Recently, a few good studies have reported on the effectiveness of the Atkins Diet Plan and other low Carb diets.
In short, low Carb diets, measured at one year, are safe and effective in helping dieters lose weight. Like all diet types, the evidence for long term effectiveness (2 to 5 years) is sparse and inconsistent. Cardiovascular risk increases for some dieters on low Carb diets, not because of the carbohydrate restriction, but because of the consumption of foods high in fat. Also, sticking with the low Carb diet appears to be tough for most dieters beyond one year. And lastly, low Carb diets that promote long stages of measurable ketosis may cause rapid weight loss that is too extreme. This is a great way to guarantee weight regain in the near future. Conclusion Atkins death, from whatever the cause, can not be associated with his diet because he was 72 years old at the time of his death. Even if Dr. Atkins' death could be associated with his diet, no correlations could be made to similar low Carb diets, too much variation exists between them. Bankruptcy does not belong in a scientific discussion of a diet's effectiveness. To Healthy Living! Michael A. Smith, MD

Beading Thread - Choosing The Right One
By Felicity Walker Walk into any beading store, and once you can tear your gaze away from the amazing variety of beads, you might manage to find the thread section. This is a great opportunity to get completely bamboozled. There are many different types of threads used in beading, so how do you work out which one you need for your project? Let's take a look at what's available. Tiger Tail and Beading Wire There are many variations, but beading wire and tiger tail are basically multiple strands of steel wire covered in plastic or nylon. They are easy to use, come in a variety of gauges, and are particularly good for making jewelry. They're also quite durable, but may be a little difficult to use if you're using knots between beads. Tiger tail is cheaper and can be used for most things, but can sometimes kink when being used. It's easiest to finish pieces made with tiger tail or beading wire using crimps, rather than knots. Synthetic Beading Threads Nymo is one of the most popular synthetic threads, and as it's very fine, is often used for more delicate beadwork. Polyester thread is another option. Generally these threads are used for beadwork that requires needles. Make sure you allow plenty of extra thread if you're going to be weaving or knotting synthetic threads. Natural Threads Silk, linen, cotton and leather are all natural materials that can be used when making beaded jewelry. They're available in a multitude of colors and thicknesses, although some of the very fine silk and linen threads can be easy to break and must be handled carefully. You can also use hemp for beading, but it's generally reserved for chunkier designs, and can be knotted or braided for a great effect. Elastic Thread Again, this can be found in a variety of thicknesses. This type of thread is great for kids to work with, because they can simply tie the ends together when they've finished beading and it stretches when you want to put the jewelry on or take it off. Memory Wire Memory wire is strong, precoiled wire, and is used extensively for making chokers, rings and bracelets. You need heavy-duty tools for cutting memory wire. Although it's a type of wire, it can't be used for wirework, and beads are threaded onto it in a similar fashion to the threads listed above. Metal Wire Metal wires come in copper, silver, gold and brass, as well as silver or gold-plated. These are mostly used for wirework methods of beading, because they can be bent and manipulated into any shape you want. Some of the finer gauge wires are only suitable for decoration purposes, but heavier gauge wires can be used for any type of wire wrapping. It's important to take care when working with metal wires, and in particular, protect your eyes when cutting them. Now when you visit your beading store, you'll at least know what some of the threads you can see are used for. Think about your beading project, including the weight of the beads and the size of their holes, when deciding which thread or wire will be most suitable. Always try to choose the strongest thread possible, so that your piece will be durable, but remember that you still want it to be flexible and have some movement. The First Critical DIET Question You MUST Have Answered
By Joel Brame Let me read your mind: You want to go on a diet, and you want to find some way to ensure results. Youre probably tired of bouncing around from idea to idea, and wish you could find something you KNOW will work. Most people go on a diet to slim down and LOSE WEIGHT. Some, however, are trying to gain muscle mass, or prevent an illness like heart disease, or perhaps fitness train for a competition event. Regardless of your reasons for dieting, you have an end goal in mind that youd like to manifest in your life. My guess is that youve had some difficulty in getting results. Your past efforts have not felt satisfying for you, or have not helped you achieve your end goal. If so, its likely that you havent been asking the first of 3 critical diet questions that can make or break success. If youve struggled with weight loss in the past, youre probably already familiar with several popular diets. And there are plenty to choose from: South Beach Diet, You On A Diet, Abs Diet, and countless more. Some people have read a dozen diet books; when you talk to them, they have an incredible wealth of knowledge at their disposal. What DONT they have? Results. When people try new diets and weight loss products year after year, they go into every new diet looking for some special new approach that will finally bring them results. They want new INFORMATION. Yet if you ask that person how long they lasted on their previous diet, the honest answer will likely be: Oh, a few weeks or months. After a short time, they quit the diet and felt excitedly liberated about eating their typical foods again. In this case, was this a problem with the diet itself, or difficulty in maintaining the necessary changes that come with the diet? Were they simply in need of more Inspiration, rather than a new set of Information? If you want lasting results, heres the FIRST critical question you must answer: Did your previous diets fail due to lack of Information, or lack of Inspiration? Information is knowledge. It comes in the form of recipes, acceptable food lists, descriptions of weight loss hormones, exercise tips, etc. You dont have to be a genius to succeed at a diet. However, if youve never learned anything about the foods you eat, and their impact on your body, then you do need more information. Books such as You On A Diet have a strong educational component, and are highly recommended. Inspiration is different. It involves a source of power and motivation that comes from within YOU. Inspiration gives you the ability to:
- handle food cravings gracefully
- stick to the diet when the going gets rough
- cope whenever life stresses make you want to quit
- make good decisions when your friends and family tempt you with food. Inspiration is within YOU right now: Every single person on the planet was born with a lifelong ability to tap into Inspiration. Lack of Inspiration, not Information, is the most common underlying problem when diets fail to bring lasting results. You cannot get Inspiration from a book (it comes only from within you). Instead, books can give you TOOLS to create Inspiration within yourself on a daily basis. One more critical distinction you must know: Inspiration is different from motivation. Motivation involves ambition to get something done. Motivation typically comes AFTER we see progress with the diet. But what if no progress is seen? Will you quit? This is where Inspiration makes or breaks your ultimate success. Lasting results with your diet must begin from the Inside, not the outside. Why did your previous diet(s) fail? If lack of Inspiration was the final issue, then you can take action to learn Tools of Inspiration, rather than another set of food recipes. Tools of Inspiration are readily available in books from authors such as Wayne Dyer, Byron Katie, and Thich Nhat Hanh. Buy AND read as many as you can -- otherwise these self-help books only become shelf-help books! Take your previous knowledge, combine it with your new Tools of Inspiration, and watch your life and your weight transform right before your eyes. Cherries as an Effective Natural Remedy for Gout
By Groshan Fabiola Gout is a type of arthritis caused by the excessive accumulation of uric acid inside the organism. In large amounts, uric acid forms crystals which deposit in various regions of the body, causing inflammation, pain and swelling of the joints. Uric acid is a waste product that results from purine metabolism. Although most cases of gout are hereditary, occurring due to genetically acquired renal dysfunctions which determine an inappropriate elimination of uric acid, gout is more likely to occur in people who consume large amounts of purine-rich foods. Thus, an appropriate diet and lifestyle improvements can successfully alleviate the symptoms of gout and can actually reverse the undesirable effects of the disease. There are many natural products that can reduce serum uric acid concentration. Gout sufferers are advised to eat plenty of fiber-rich vegetables (preferably raw) and fresh fruits, as they contain low levels of purines and they are also a great source of vital nutrients. Among all fruits, cherries seem to be the best natural remedy for gout. Apart from being irresistibly delicious, cherries have anti-inflammatory, sedative and analgesic properties, and they can considerably ameliorate the clinical manifestations of gout. A frequent intake of cherries can considerably reduce the duration and the intensity of gout attacks, by normalizing uric acid levels inside the body. Recent studies have revealed that by including cherries in their diet, gout sufferers are able to eliminate more uric acid through urine. Thus, cherries act as a purgative agent, aiding the process of excretion. Both sweet cherries (dark cherries) and sour cherries (ruby-red cherries) have proved to be very benefic for gout sufferers. Sweet cherries contain few calories and are rich in natural fibers. Sweet cherries contain melatonin, a chemical that has sedative and analgesic effects. Thus, the intake of sweet cherries can also ease recurrent gout pain. In addition, this type of cherries contains a powerful natural antioxidant that acts similarly to vitamin C. Sweet cherries can also lower the levels of inflammatory substances such as nitric oxide and C-reactive protein, chemicals that are related to gout, diabetes and heart disease. Sour cherries seem to reduce gout pain and inflammation and they also contain natural antioxidants that can decongest the arteries clogged with uric acid crystals. Sour cherries are rich in vitamin A, they contain very few calories and they can be safely introduced in any gout diet. Recent studies have revealed that by consuming around 100 grams of cherries each day, gout sufferers can experience a rapid amelioration of their symptoms. Although it is best to consume them raw, cherries can also be introduced in various recipes. Thanks to their remarkable qualities, cherries should be included in any diet. If you are intersted in finding more information about gout you can click on this website. Also you will find there valuable information about Foods That Cause Gout and causes of gout. Are Slimming Pills The Solution?
By Jo Wood It's a sad fact of modern life that many people will do whatever it takes for them to lose weight. Unfortunately, this often results in extreme behaviors such as binging, purging, overdosing on laxatives or just not eating at all. These extreme eating habits, and the use of products such as slimming pills, can cause illness and permanent damage to the body. Theres no doubt that being constantly bombarded by glamorous media images gives many people an unrealistic idea of an attractive body shape. However it's also true that our modern western diet is very unhealthy, leading to a huge increase in obesity levels. So weight loss is actually necessary for many people in order to improve their health. Many turn to slimming pills for a quick fix. There are two main problems with this. First, many diet pills cause unwanted side effects, let alone raising concerns about putting more chemicals into your body. Plus, once you stop taking the slimming pills, what happens? For most people, they put any lost weight straight back on again. The long term solution is to make a few simple changes to your diet, and increase your levels of exercise. One change that's simple to make is to have four smaller meals each day, rather than three larger ones. Odd as it might sound, it actually helps your metabolism function more effectively by eating more frequent, smaller meals. Some nutritionists recommend as many as six small meals a day. Slimming pills, on the other hand, generally work by suppressing your appetite. So instead of keeping your metabolism ticking over regularly throughout the day, it just ends up getting confused. Your body also needs a wide variety of vitamins and minerals for optimum health. You can't get those by not eating because slimming pills have suppressed your appetite. Of course you probably need to do more than eat smaller meals more frequently if you want to lose weight. You also need to reduce saturated fats, eat healthier foods from the main food groups, and increase your level of exercise. Making these changes will help you lose weight healthily and keep it off for the long term, unlike slimming pills. Discover more about diet pills. How S.M.A.R.T. Are You When Setting Your Weight Loss Goals?
By Jeff Cadwell What does S.M.A.R.T. stand for? In terms of weight loss goals, this is an acronym for Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic and Timely. By establishing S.M.A.R.T. weight loss goals, you will show yourself that you have a solid determination and drive to get to your purpose. Setting goals is so very important to your success and will be influential in maintaining your weight loss for a lifetime. Simply, goals give you something to work toward. They also confirm that you are moving along a specific, achievable and self-defined path. The system I am about to present will show you a way to achieve your goals more effectively. Got a weight loss goal? Examine it against these S.M.A.R.T. guidelines: ************************************************************************ SPECIFIC Set clear, concrete, significant and well-defined goals. Your goals for losing weight should be clear-cut and specifically define what you want to happen. The more detailed your goals, the more it will help you focus your efforts and clearly identify how you are going to proceed. For example, if you wanted to build a house, you would first think about what type of house it would be. You would consider whether it would be a condominium, a bungalow, or maybe even a mansion. You would also think about the location that you wished to live in. In setting goals for your own weight loss, these same clear and concrete planning strategies should apply. You need to think about what you want, why you want to do it, and how you are going to do it. Do you have the means to do it? (financial, self-control, patience) What tools will you need to complete this? (books, food diary, gym) What kind of foundation will you need? (coach, doctor, support group) Unfortunately, many individuals miss this critical piece of the puzzle when setting their weight loss goals. Imagine if that house you wanted to build did not look the way you wanted it. Think about if you did not have an ample supply of tools to get the job done. Consider the possibility that your house did not sit on a firm enough foundation to give it the necessary support. Once you have thought your plan through, write down the details so that you have a clear understanding of your goal and the finer points involved. Post them somewhere visible as a constant reminder of what you want to accomplish. ************************************************************************ MEASURABLE Make certain that your goal is meaningful, motivational and measurable by markers. Always keep in mind that if you cannot measure it, you cannot manage it. The wonderful aspect about this part of the process is that you get to see the change come about. Aim for a specific target and establish solid deciding factors for measuring your progress. During the progression, you will not only get to measure your growth, you will also be able to stay on track and experience the joy of success, which will motivate you to keep moving forward. When I work with clients, I not only request that they weigh themselves on the scale at regular intervals, but that they take their body measurements on a quarterly basis. Their key, though, is to record their results in a journal of some sort. This is also a place where they can document their triumphs and challenges. Journaling can be a powerful tool. It can become a tool in which to track your progress as well as a place to reflect on your journey to health. ************************************************************************ ACHIEVABLE Aim for action-oriented, attainable goals. When you discover the goals that are most important to you, you begin to figure out the means to make them come true. You develop the spirit, abilities, skills and financial capacity to achieve them. You realize previously unseen opportunities to bring yourself nearer to your goals. Have you heard, Where there is a will, there is a way? A common mistake is to aim too high. It is just much easier to accomplish smaller goals that fit into a larger objective instead of trying to complete all of them at once. Although you aspire to get that big grand prize, you need to be sensible and break it down into smaller chunks. It will turn the odds of success in your favor. Great examples of aiming too high and too fast are the products that promise you overnight success. Yo-Yo dieting or drinking weight loss drinks filled with sugar and chemicals, are shameful cases of seeking the Magic Pill. Yes, you might lose a few pounds. But, are you really going to be able to eat and drink like this for the rest of your life? Also, consider that these quick and easy solutions have been proven to put health at risk. If you are to make smaller goals, they need to stretch you slightly, not be pieces of cake (no pun intended). You should feel that you can do it and understand that you will need to make a firm commitment to accomplish each step. See yourself as a pirate looking for buried treasure. Like you, he knows that he has a goal in sight. He just needs the strategy to achieve it. Once he understands why he wants it at this time, he develops a plan of many steps. He searches out the resources to get to the buried treasure. Once he has accomplished his steps, he gets to relish in his riches. Do you see a similarity within yourself as you come up with the strategies to reach your weight loss goal? Do you see that you, too, can have many riches just by making sure that your goals are truly attainable? ************************************************************************ REALISTIC You goals must be attainable, relevant to your life, improving, rewarding and results-oriented. Be honest with yourself. You know what you can do. You need to guarantee that the skills and tools needed are available. Make sure that your weight loss goal fits into the grand scheme of things (your life). This goal should not break you by attempting it. Keep in mind that if the goals you set are far too improbable, you probably will not make a commitment. Although you may start with the best intentions, the knowledge that it is too much to handle means your subconscious will remind you of this and will hinder you from giving it your best effort. Honestly, making Pie in the Sky goals will only leave you feeling more depressed and inadequate than before. Devise a plan that makes the goal practical. The goal should fit in with where you are right now, at this very moment. Think about whether the goal will fit into your lifestyle, your stresses, your surroundings, etc. The better you evaluate everything involved in your life now, the greater the chances are that you will succeed. If you go to the other end of the spectrum and set a goal that is too low, your integrity tells you that you are not going to be very competent. Remember, it is always good to put a little pressure on yourself. By setting firm guidelines with yourself, whether it be to only have ice cream once a week or have a small portion of potato chips in the afternoon, you are being more realistic and setting yourself up to succeed. In the end, your sense of pride will be well worth it! ************************************************************************ TIMELY Set goals that are trackable, manageable, and have a clear timeframe. Setting a deadline for your goal gives you a clear target to shoot for. Whether it is a day, a week or a month, you need to set a time limit. If you do not set a date, your goal is too vague. Without a timeframe, you feel that you can start at any time and there is no urgency to start taking action. Many of my clients have told me that they started diet programs during times of deep depression or extreme pressure from their physicians. Lets face the facts. If you are not the one who sets the timeframe for when you are going to start your plan, you are going to become belligerent and downright rebellious. The fact is that it needs to be your decision and you need to think about how your weight loss goal fits in with your schedule. S.M.A.R.T. goal planning starts with sitting down and realistically asking yourself, Is this the right time to do this? Without this piece, you are not being very sensible. You may need to take the time to meditate and determine within yourself what kind of time commitment this is going to take. If you are ready to start setting some goals for yourself, you are taking a step in the right direction. It clearly shows that there are good things there, like purpose and determination! ************************************************************************ It is important to put into perspective why you wish to lose weight and to keep that reason in the forefront of your mind. Being overweight, do you want to save you life? Would you like to see your kids graduate from college? Have you always wanted to sit comfortably on an airplane? There are so many reasons. Which one is yours? Once again, I encourage you to write down each step of your S.M.A.R.T. goal strategy so that you can refer to them along the way. Always keep in mind that your intentions mean nothing until you take that first step. Are YOU ready to take that first step?
